Program Description
“…taking care of a pet feeding, grooming and veterinary care can be financially and physically burdensome to seniors. More often than not, a devoted animal lover with limited access to food will feed their hungry pet before they feed themselves.”
“Pet assistance programs have become an increasingly common extension of Meals on Wheels’ 'more than just a meal' offering, because we know that there are myriad health and wellness benefits linked to animal ownership and the companionship and sense of purpose pets provide to seniors.”

Many home-bound elderly experience social isolation and loneliness. Meals on Wheels along with Pet Smart Charities realized that the well-being of many seniors depends on the ability to care for their pet.
Seniors are supported through the pet assistance program which free delivers pet food and supplies.
The Meals on Wheels America Pet Assistance Program helps keep pets of older adults healthy by providing pet food instead of ‘human’ food which can make pets sick. Seniors are able to eat their full nutritious meals and not worry about rationing for their pets sake.
Free pet care service for seniors include:
- Preventive veterinary care
- Transportation to vet visits
- Temporary pet boarding
- Pet grooming and nail trimming to keep seniors and pets safe.
Meals on Wheels America works to fight senior hunger and isolation by delivering free nutritious meals, friendly visits and safety checks to seniors.
