"THERAPY PET PALS OF TEXAS" PROGRAM

WHATThe Therapy Pet Pals of Texas Program places trained volunteer pet handlers and pets in healthcare facilities such as nursing homes, hospitals, rehabilitation centers, State and County facilities and other special needs environments.
WHYTo enhance the quality of life for all institutionalized persons, such as those individuals in nursing homes, long-term care facilities, the mentally ill and terminally ill.
WHERETherapy Pet Pals of Texas. Austin, Texas, USA.

Program Description

"Pet Pals work as 'ice-breakers' to break down communication barriers for 'Therapy Pet Pals of Texas' volunteers to initiate conversations."

"Because 'Therapy Pet Pals of Texas' volunteers are assigned a regular place of visitation, Pet Pal Teams see the same people each week. This allows for a 'bonding' effect, and after a few months, our volunteers and their pets become like family - sometimes being the residents/patients only visitors."

Therapy dogs are able to help seniors in nursing homes or rehabilitation centers with physical or occupational therapy. Senior residents are able to exercise afflicted limbs by throwing a ball for a dog to fetch, or pet a dog or cat with an arm injured by a stroke. Those seniors in need of walking are often more willing to do so if a dog walks along side them.

Withdrawn and non-communicative seniors may not respond to any other nursing home activities but will often respond to a dog in a nursing home or a cat which they can hold.
