BAYCREST BEHAVIORAL SUPPORT FOR SENIORS PROGRAM

Program Description


"Depression in not a normal part of aging that's actually a myth. There's lots of problems that happen in late life such as losses, people pass away, bereavement, financial strains, moves, physical illness so there are difficulties and problems that arise in late life. But it's a myth that you know, one should always be depressed and sad during this time."

The Behavioral Support for Seniors Program supports those seniors, their families and caregivers with difficult behaviors as a result of mental health, dementia, neurological conditions and brain injuries.

  • Geriatric Psychiatry Community Service - in-home and outpatient service providing psychiatry assessment for older people experiencing mental health problems such as depression and memory loss along with treatment and referral to psychiatric services.
  • Inpatient Psychiatry Program
  • Long-Term Care Behavioral Support Outreach Team
  • Mood and Related Disorders Clinic
  • Psychiatric Day Hospital for Depression
Symptoms of depression in seniors may include mood anxiety, nervousness, difficulty making decisions, sleep disturbances, memory loss, confusion, personality changes, paranoia, excessive suspiciousness, and disturbing thoughts.

Baycrest also provides Seniors Counseling and Referral Services and Caregiver Counseling and houses the Rotman Research Institute dedicated to the study of human brain function with an emphasis on stroke, traumatic brain injury, Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias.

Baycrest focuses on geriatric care, aging research, education and innovation in aging and brain health, aging related products and goods. The organization aims to partner with organizations across Canada and around the world to advance healthy aging and the wellbeing of seniors.
