WHATCare & Repair Cymru – the "Older People's Housing Champion" is a national charity working to ensure that elderly are living safely in their homes that are still meeting their physical needs. Also known as "staying put" or "aging in place."

Program Description

"Through our work, and close relationship with the 22 Agencies, we listen to the needs and desires of older people and on the national stage articulate this information to policy makers at the Welsh Government. This advocacy work helps inform thinking about Housing Policy for older people, and wider Health and Social Care policy for older people which is intrinsically linked to appropriate, good quality housing."

The “Care & Repair Cymru” website has a useful guide for elderly who are interested in how to go about making home improvements called the “Contractors guide,” along with the guide: “Housing Adaptations - The Key To Independent Living For Older People,” detailing home improvement grants and other information for seniors.

Care & Repair Cymru also provides another program called the “Rapid Response Adaptations” Program which is a free rapid home repair or home adaptation service for elderly who are returning from a hospital stay. Elderly are referred to the Program by a General Practitioner, Nurse, Occupational Therapist or Community Care Worker etc.

A few examples of free home improvement or home modifications for elderly include:

  • Wheelchair Ramps and Access Ramps
  • Railings
  • Grab Bar or Rails
  • Levelling Pathways Or Flooring
  • Electrical Repairs
  • Heating, Lighting Repairs
  • Safety alarms

Examples of major home modifications for elderly funded by the Disabled Facilities Grant include the following home improvement examples:

-Making it easier for elderly to get into and out their homes by widening the doors and installing access ramps or wheelchair ramps
-Installing a stair-lift or providing a downstairs bathroom
-Providing suitable bathroom and kitchen facilities that can be used independently such as a level access shower, accessible WC and accessible kitchen facilities
-Room conversions and extensions
-Adapting heating or lighting controls to make them easier to use
-Improving access to a garden by making it easier or safer
