“DOROT - FAMILY CIRCLE” PROGRAM

WHAT Families of volunteers visit seniors on holidays such as Rosh Hashanah, Chanukah, Tu B’Shevat, and Passover, and bring gifts for seniors provided by the organization DOROT.

Program Description


"DOROT's Family Circle program is a premiere source of intergenerational friendship and childhood education in community values. Seniors share their life experiences with the young, while families with children aged 412 enrich the lives of the elderly. Families in this program receive a thorough orientation in visiting etiquette, and before each visit children receive workbooks with conversation and activity suggestions. Each family visits their older friend on Sundays before holidays such as Rosh Hashanah, Chanukah, Tu B'Shevat, and Passover, bringing with them holiday packages and gifts provided by DOROT."

Families are matched up to visit with a senior during the holidays.

The "DOROT Family Circle" Program gives parents with young children an opportunity to build a relationships with a senior. Intergenerational visits also help keep seniors connected to the community.

Families receive a "DOROT Family Circle" orientation and learn all about visiting with a senior etiquette. Children receive workbooks with conversation and activity suggestions they can engage in with seniors.

The "DOROT" organization aims to help elderly by alleviating social isolation and provide senior services to encourage independent living. DOROT serves the Jewish and wider community through intergenerational activities.

Building Closure into Your Practice - End of Life Care for Physicians Training - The Jewish Healthcare Foundation teaching physicians the communication skills, medical principles, and techniques needed to improve the care that they provide for patients with life-limiting illnesses.

Elder's Family Learning Initiative Program - Training classes to assist families coping with the long-term care system allowing seniors to live in comfort, greater independence, dignity and in an environment based on Jewish values.

DOROT Kosher Meals for the Homebound Program
- Home delivery of nutritious kosher senior meals to elderly in New York.
