Program Description

"While most seniors drive safely, gradual changes in vision, movement, perception, attention and memory can place them at risk for being involved in or causing an accident. Our program can help assess their ability to remain safe behind-the-wheel."

"Driving provides independence and mobility. For many, it is one of the most important activities of adult daily life."

The drivers assessment program is ideal for senior drivers who want to receive driver rehabilitation and learn how to continue driving safely and independently.

A doctor’s prescription (referral) is required to participate in the program. Family members who are concerned about a loved ones driving or who may not be able to talk to the elderly driver in a way in which they are responsive, can contact the program for more information. Hearing details and facts about ones driving in a compassionate way from a third party may be helpful in getting the right help to senior drivers.

St. Jude Medical Center then connects senior drivers to occupational therapists who are trained in driver rehabilitation who together conduct a three-hour assessment including:

-Visual and perceptual screening
-Reaction time testing in a state-of-the-art driving simulator
-A one-hour driving assessment in a dual-controlled car

After a driving assessment the occupational therapist will provide:

-Recommendations regarding the driving performance, such as new skills to compensate for changes experienced in aging such as vision loss, hearing loss, joint and muscle pain etc., and any adaptive equipment needed for the senior driver.
-Suggestions and resources for for additional consultations, therapies or training

The “St. Jude Medical Center Driver Assessment” Program also helps individuals returning to driving after severe illness or disability, such as stroke, Alzheimer's, Parkinson's Disease, head trauma or spinal cord injury and disabled persons who are looking for a driving evaluation (on their ability to drive for the first time.)
