"The 'Nurses Improving Care For Health System Elders' (NICHE) Program provides the principles, resources and tools to stimulate a change in the culture of health care facilities and achieve patient-centered care for older adult patients."
Hospital leaders learn how to improve elderly nursing care by engaging in the six week training program delivered via a web based platform and facilitated by the NICHE team. Discussions, readings and assignments take place in order to guide the planning of NICHE implementation at the designated hospital.
At the end of the training program an action plan for how the hospital can improve geriatric care is developed and reviewed with a NICHE expert in order to become a NICHE-designated facility. In total there are approximately 300 hospitals throughout North America in the NICHE Network.
Hospitals are able to send managers and others in leadership roles such as Heads of Geriatric Nursing, Director of Nursing, Medical Directors, and Administrators to attend the 'Nurses Improving Care For Health System Elders' (NICHE) training. Other staff recommended include: direct care staff, such as CNA's, those in geriatric rehabilitation, geriatric social work, and pharmacy.
The following NICHE tools are available at no cost to healthcare professionals and others interested in pursuing NICHE designation:
-Certification Tool Kit provides guidance for the promotion of gerontological certification in a healthcare system and strategies for achieving certification for nurses
-Introduction to Gerontology - set of training modules that provides a foundation for developing geriatric-sensitive care across all hospital departments
The "NICHE" Program holds the annual "NICHE" conference where leaders in gerontology speak on how to improve elderly nursing care for elderly hospital patients. Discussion panels and presentations also teach hospital leaders and other participants how to manage common geriatric issues along with new approaches to innovative solutions to creating a culture change in geriatric care. "NICHE" also hold a contest for hospitals to enter video submissions of how their facility has best implemented Innovations and improvement in elderly nursing care.
