ELDER OUTREACH BUILDING BRIDGES

WHATSenior living and long-term care communities partner with local schools to bring together older adults and children for intergenerational exchanges.
WHYTo facilitate and encourage learning between age groups and promote fun social interactions.
WHEREElder Outreach.
Building Bridges
Louisiana, USA.

Program Description

“These interactions are a win-win for both groups. Residents experience less isolation, learn new skills, receive needed emotional support and experience health benefits. At the same time, the children often see improvement in their academics and growth in their social skills, while exhibiting less negative behavior.”

Intergenerational programs built into nursing home enrichment activities can provide opportunities for social engagment and stimulation.

Interactions with students can also help reduce age related stereotypes of elderly living in nursing homes.

Intergenerational interactions may include activities such as:

-Senior residents reading to students in the classroom
-Children reading to bed-bound residents
-Playing board games
-Working together on puzzles
-Singing songs
-Making snacks
-Students volunteering at community socials
