"MEDICAL FOSTER HOME CARE FOR VETERANS" PROGRAM

WHAT Community members become caregiviers taking Veterans into their homes and provide an adult foster home and home care.
WHYA large number of Veterans live alone. Foster care is an alternative to veteran self-neglect and to placement in a nursing home.
WHEREThe Veterans Association (VA) Health Care System.
Across the USA.

Program Description

"The Medical Foster Home is a unique partnership of adult foster home and Home Based Primary Care. There are many Veterans who live alone and independently for years through the support of assistive devices and home care services. Eventually the Veteran may decline to the point that it is no longer safe to remain living alone. Traditionally, this situation is resolved by nursing home placement; however, the Veteran may refuse nursing home care, instead accepting serious risks. This is where the Medical Foster Home program steps in to offer a safe, favorable, and less costly alternative to the Veteran."

The "Medical Foster Home Care for Veterans" Program combines adult foster care and home care for Veterans.

The "Medical Foster Home Care for Veterans" Program finds caregivers in the community who are willing to take a Veteran into their home and provide assisted living in the form of 24-hour supervision and home care.

Fostering a Veteran is a long-term care commitment that may include a Veteran living with the foster caregiver for the remainder of his or her life. Caregivers are paid directly by the Veteran, anywhere from $1,500 to $3,000 depending upon the level of care.

The cost includes a Veteran's room and board. Level of care may range from 24-hour supervision, is incontinent, bed-bound, requires assistance with medications, such as someone with dementia, or other cognitive disorders to a Veteran who is independent in activities of daily living but requires supervision.

The advantage to the Veteran is that it provides assisted living in a home environment and in some cases is more cost effective than a nursing home.

A benefit to a community caregiver is that it gives them an opportunity to serve Veterans who have served the country.
