Program Description


"Residents have the right to understand and be understood in a communication mode of their choice not someone else's. Staff will be trained in the various modes of communication and ongoing upgrading of these skills will be required."

"The design of our home supports our belief that isolation of deaf seniors can be prevented by ensuring a unique environment, which promotes and preserves deaf culture, language, and heritage."

The “Bob Rumball Assisted Living Home for the Deaf” provides an long term care environment that takes into account Deaf seniors who depend on a visually oriented environment by using specialized lighting techniques and interior design requirements. Visual fire alarm systems, visual call bell systems, captioned TV's TTY's, and LED message boards are used throughout the home.

The “Bob Rumball Assisted Living Home for the Deaf” Program aims to

· Promote a sense of belonging, dignity and individuality for Deaf seniors
· Maintain an optimal level of independence for deaf senior residents
· Allow each senior resident to participate in decision making about their health care
· Promote holistic health
· Provide a resident centered approach
· Accommodate various communication modes for Deaf seniors


The "Bob Rumball Foundations also supports the following programs for Deaf Seniors:

"Bob Rumball Centre for the Deaf - Senior Supportive Housing" Program which provides deaf seniors with the choice of a Bachelor, 1 bedroom, or 2 bedroom apartment with kitchenette and full bath with access to lounges, dining room, gymnasium and activity room including parking. The Supportive Housing Program includes: • Home Support Workers • Congregate Meal Dining Program • Communicator/Intervenor • 24 hour Emergency Response System • Hairdressing • Assistance with shopping, Housekeeping and Laundry • Transportation • Senior Activities.

"Bob Rumball Centre for the Deaf - Toronto Deaf Seniors Centre is a senior center for Deaf seniors and provides a location where seniors have opportunities for social interaction such as: • Diners Club • Educational Workshops • Bowling, Bingo • Picnic, Trips • Crafts • Health and Fitness Programs.

"Bob Rumball Centre for the Deaf - Senior Day Program - A free day program for deaf seniors and adults or for those who are developmentally delayed, physically challenged or have complex medical issues in addition to deafness. Social activities include: Crafts, Woodworking, Computing, Social activities, Sports. Funding is provided in part by the Ministry of Community and Social Services.
