In order to participate in the National Senior Games individuals must be at least 50 years old and qualify the year before through a NSGA sanctioned State Qualifying Games.

The National Senior Games Association promotes an active lifestyle for older adults though educational classes at the United States Sports Academy covering topics such as: managing events in the sports industry, coaching, nutrition, along with new fitness programs, videos and tips.

The National Senior Olympics Organization planned the first National Senior Olympic Games, held in 1987 in St. Louis. In 1990 the organization began working under the name National Senior Games Association.
