Program Description

“Men’s Shed provides a safe and busy environment where men can find many of these things in an atmosphere of old-fashioned friendship. And, importantly, there is no pressure. Men can just come and have a chat or dig in and work on a project.”

“Men won’t talk face to face, but that they will talk Shoulder to Shoulder is very, very true."

“‘Although the stigma is lessening as awareness increases, I think men still need to be encouraged to share their issues and confront loneliness.’ suggests Andrew Swain of Greystones Men’s Shed. ‘In our shed we are committed to tackling this issue for young and old retired, unemployed or working; able-bodied or with special needs.’ ”

“With over 2,000 Men’s Sheds world-wide in twelve different countries, a lot has been learned about different ways to get started.”

Men’s Shed can provide men with a safe environment and an opportunity to be productive and contribute to their community. Waking up and going to work on a project in the workshop may help reduce loneliness, depression and anxiety.

Men’s Shed can be used for projects by an individual or for larger projects benefiting the community.

Individuals can use the shed as a place to create, use their skills, experiment, feel a sense of purpose, socialize and more.

Examples of Men’s Sheds benefiting communities include projects to improve local parks such as building or maintaining benches and structures, teaching children and youth how to build through workshops at schools, and much more.

Men’s Shed can improve the health and well-being of older men and provide several benefits including:

Skills and Talent - using experience to build and teach others.
Creative Outlet - self-expression.
Sense of Purpose - for retired men or those with spare time.
Support - of other men and reducing social isolation and loneliness.
Self Esteem - boosting mood, self-esteem and self-worth.
Social Circle - making new friendships.
Fun - learning how to enjoy life and laugh.

A shed can be set up anywhere including a community center, senior center, a place of worship and other locations. Anyone looking for information on how to start up their own Men’s Shed workshop can visit the website for more information.
