LGBT AGING CULTURAL COMPETENCY TRAINING PROGRAM
National Resource Center on LGBT Aging.
New York, NY, USA.
"Cultural competency is the idea that LGBT older people are as deserving of compassionate eldercare as anyone else. The LGBT senior population—a large and growing one—has unique needs due to a lifetime of discrimination and harassment. LGBT elders should not be fearful when seeking health care or long-term care."
Senior organizations, staff and caregivers may not consider the sexual orientation of the seniors whom they care for or may not be trained to provide care and services for LGBT seniors in culturally sensitive ways.
The LGBT Aging Cultural Competency Training Program trains the following organizations that work with LGBT older adults:
- Skilled nursing facilities.
- Health care organizations.
- Assisted living communities.
- Hospice and palliative care.
- Long-term care communities.
- Home health providers.
- Anyone providing services to older adults.
LGBT Aging Cultural Competency Training trains staff, administrators, executives and volunteers to provide the best possible care services to LGBT seniors.
Sensitivity Training Topics include:
-Supporting LGBT Seniors.
-Creating Inclusiveness for LGBT Seniors.
-Bullying Between Seniors.
-Asking about Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity.
-Exploring Myths and Misinformation about HIV and AIDS.
-Exploring why LGBT Older Adults are Less Likely to Access Health and Social Services.
-Hospice, Palliative and End of Life Care for LGBT Seniors Including Legal Issues.
